                                                              Archanes Area Information
Arhanes is a picturesque small town, at an altitude of 380 m [1280 ft]. The village is divided the by Kaeratos river valley, dividing
the town into two. Arhanes is 14 kilometres from the city of Heraklion and 7 kilometres from the Palace of Knossos. The area
around Arhanes is significant for its numerous archaeological sites and for the wine that is produced in the area. The town
itself still holds on to its traditional heritage, and as the sun goes down, the main square is a bustling meeting place for locals to
catch up with friends and neighbours whilst enjoying a coffee in one of the many kafenions and tavernas serving authentic
traditional local dishes. The charming narrow streets of the old town are wonderful to stroll round, much of the architecture is
Neo Classical and the town was awarded first prize in the " European Upgraded Village Award".
Arhanes is a very important Minoan site, and contains several Byzantine Churches. A wine festival is held each year, in July ,to
celebrate the export of wine, raisins, and grapes. The surrounding countryside is lush and fertile, and reminiscent of the
Tuscan landscape in Italy.
