Xania ( or Chania) is the capital of the west of the island. The old Turkish mosque on
the harbour has recently been renovated, as has the Venetian lighthouse at the end of
superb restaurants and tavernas hidden in the old courtyards.  Xania is a truly amazing
experience and has much to see, including an archaeological museum, the remains of
Venetian boat repair buildings and the city is built over the  Minoan city of Kydonia
Nearby Souda Bay is a natural harbour which houses a  NATO naval base and is the  
departure point for ferries. The airport (CHQ) on the Akrotiri  peninsular provides a
convenient arrival point for visitors. One of the most famous points in the area is the
Samaria Gorge, the longest gorge in Europe at 16km. its a long journey! Sfakia is a
lovely town with seaside tavernas and an interesting history. The area of Apokoronas ,
with its beautifuly kept traditional villages, shows pure Crete at its best, especially in
the spring time.
The White Mountains dominate the area and are visible wherever you go. Rising to a
height of 6500 feet, they are a spectacular backdrop to the small villages dotted around
the region. Beyond Xania to the west lies the town of Kastelli,  Kissamou, leading to the
Gramvousa peninsular and a wonderful scenic road which hugs the extreme west
coast    of Crete. A turning near the resort town of Maleme, takes you due south to the
quiet resort of Palaeochora.
