century. At that time the capital of Crete revolved between Chania and Heraklion. When Moustafa was in Chania, he used this as a country home where he stayed with his wives and personnel. Captain Mathios Milonogiannis was the leader of the Apokoronas freedom fighters during the fighting against the Ottoman Empire. Mathios’ brother Giannis, eventually bought this house from the Greek government in 1923 and it has been occupied by his ancestors ever since. In 1985 the Ministry of Culture declared the house a national historical monument. Restoration work began on the house in April 2001 under the supervision of the Archaeology Ministry. Many of the same building techniques used centuries ago were used during the year-long restoration. The main entrance to the villa is located within a private, large inner courtyard tiled with stone slabs .The pool and garden area is also accessed from the courtyard. The villa has a large private swimming pool, BBQ area and garden. The spacious living area was the original wine cellar area of the house. Stone arches 6 meters high and a fireplace provide the background for a comfortable seating area with two sofas, several chairs and a writing desk. The mezzanine "loft" above the living area has two small single beds ( suitable for children only) and a wardrobe. A bathroom with full bath tub and shower is situated below the loft. The kitchen is fully fitted and has a large dining table. A full fridge-freezer, microwave, kettle, toaster and cooking utensils complete the kitchen making it well equipped for self catering holidays. There is a small W/C just off the kitchen area. One of the two master bedroom suites is located up stairs and this part of the building was originally the Pashas“harem” and is built on three levels. A wood burning stove and seating area provide ample room to relax and up a further, short flight of stairs is a wrought iron, canopied double bed and wardrobe. There is an en suite bathroom with a full sized bath for this suite . A large roof terrace is accessed through the seating area. The second master bedroom suite is situated on the ground floor, adjacent to the main living area. Originally this area of the property was the kitchen and the arched, open cooking area remains one of the features of this suite. There is also a wood burning fireplace/traditional oven. Next to the fireplace is a coffee- making nook complete with sink and full fridge-freezer, coffee maker and kettle. This suite also has a wrought iron, canopied double bed, large wardrobe and full bath. There is a small private stone tiled terrace and garden area outside this suite. The Venetian Apartment, which can be used as a third bedroom is located at the front of the property and is a self-contained apartment. A canopied wrought- iron bed, wardrobe, complete kitchen and bathroom with a glass shower stall provide excellent accommodation for extra guests. The terrace of the Venetian apartment overlooks the square and village. This beautiful historical villa is perfect for family holidays or groups of friends, and offers a comfortable, base for exploring the stunning surrounding area and charming village of Kefalas. The village has a couple of well stocked village mini markets, tavernas and traditional kafeneons ( coffee shops). The nearest sandy beachs are at Almyrida and Georgioupolis ( 15 mins drive) , although the secluded bay at Ombrosgialos is 10 minutes away, and offers crystal clear water and an excellent area for snorkeling. There is also a charming fish taverna overlooking the bay. |
