The Prefecture of Heraklion,houses the capital of the island and is the most frequented
area in Crete, mainly due to its splendid archaeological sites such as the Palaces of
Knossos and Faistos displaying the magnificence of the Minoan civilization, and the           
Roman remains at Gortyna. But apart from the famous historical monuments, Heraklion
has an abundance of other wonderful characteristics that make the prefecture an
excellent holiday destination for all types of visitors. Stunning beaches, lush hillsides,  
charming traditional villages seeped in tradition and history , and areas of unspoilt
natural beauty can all be found in the Heraklion Prefecture.

Whilst the city, like all capital cities,is  busy and rather fast paced, only a couple of miles
inland, one finds themselves in lush countryside, with the rolling vineyards of the wine
producing areas of Archanes and Peza. The town of Archanes retains much of its
original Noe Classical and Venetian buildings and has been awarded first prize in the  
" European Upgraded Village Award" for its beauty. The town square bustles with local
life in the evening and is a great place for people watching over a slow meal in one of
the excellent tavernas.
