The Lassithi perfecture is located on the eastern part of the island, bordering on  the
prefecture of Heraklion.  Lassithi comprises of the following four counties: Mirabello,
Lassithi, Ierapetra and Sitia. The prefecture of Lassithi is famous for its wild beauty as
well as remarkable historical and archaeological monuments. Traditional settlements
are scattered all over the prefecture.  Lassithi Crete has a unique morphology,
combining long coasts, fertile plains, and rough mountainous terrain. Most people visit
the island of Crete during the summer months, which are the high tourist season, since
the area is celebrated for its unique coasts. The excellent climate and the mild weather
of Lassithi, make it a great holiday destination all year long.
The southern coast of Lassithi, with its long sandy beaches and small coves has a
warmer climate, due to the Libyan Sea, and is a favorite destination for nature lovers and
walkers, and has many areas of unspoilt natural beauty.
The town of Agios Nikolaos is the capital of the area of Lassithi, and is a working
administration town all year round. The beautiful bay of Mirabello has attracted visitors for
many years. The town of Elounda, has a rich history, and the protected Kolokitha
Peninsula and the Venetian salt pans offer an excellent breeding and feeding ground for
migrating birds.
There are several important archaeological sites within the county, and the South coast
boasts several small gorges.
