Swallow Cottage Episkopi, Heraklion
The village dates back to the second Byzantine period on Crete. During this time the bishop seat of the coastal village Hersonissos was moved further inland. There are many small Byzantine churches with frescoes from the Cretan School of Renaissance (14th/15th century) are found in and around the village.
Minoan finds from the 2nd millennium B.C. have been discovered around the area. Two important places of Minoan worship the Eileithyia cave and the Skotino cave are not far away.
The main source of income is from agriculture. Olive groves and vineyards surround the villages. Life moves with a different pace compared to the coastal tourist areas. This is Crete the way it was and the way it is meant to be.
